The Prince and Princess of Wales are mourning a family loss.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have released a joint statement following the death of the Duchess of Kent.

“Our thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas,” read a message on the official Prince and Princess of Wales Instagram Stories on Sept. 5. “The Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family.”

The couple’s statement comes after the palace confirmed the death of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, who was 92-years-old.

“It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement posted on social media.

“Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family. The King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly The Duchess’s life-long devotion to all the organisations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people,” the statement continued.

Katharine became a royal after marrying Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1961. She and Edward have three children together — George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, Helen Taylor and Nicholas Windsor, who William and Kate mentioned in their statement.

Royal watchers have reacted to the sad news on Instagram, leaving well wishes and messages of sympathy to the royal family as they grieve this loss.
