According to previous reports, St. Lucie Public Schools officials say the crash happened when an SUV rear-ended one of the buses, pushing it into the bus ahead.
Six students were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
Five have since been released, while one remains hospitalized for observation. No update on the student’s condition was available as of Monday.
“Our thoughts are with the students, families, and staff members impacted by last night’s accident,” said Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince in a statement. “We are incredibly thankful for the immediate response and support from Manatee County Schools, local first responders, and our own team members who worked together to ensure our students’ safety and well-being.”
Officials said Manatee County Schools quickly stepped in to help, sending two buses late Saturday night to transport the remaining students back to Fort Pierce Central. The students were reunited with their families early Sunday morning.
