HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Department of Health is investigating a presumptive case of avian flu on Oahu.
Preliminary tests conducted on an ailing duck found at the University of Hawaii at Manoa came back with an “unconfirmed result.”
The DOH is working with the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity and the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The agencies are awaiting results from a national veterinary lab to determine if the duck has H5N1 influenza A, which is highly infectious among poultry and wild birds.
The test results are expected to come back in one or two weeks.
According to the DOH, the duck was found by a UH student, who reported it to the Hawaii Wildlife Center.
However, health officials say the risk of human infection is considered low.
H5N1 influenza A was first confirmed in Hawaii in November of 2024.
As Hawaii enters migratory bird season, the public is advised to avoid touching sick or dead wild birds and report any unusual illnesses in poultry or wild birds to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity at (808) 483-7100 or email [email protected].
