The Palace is currently facing a very uneasy relationship in the eyes of some.
Constitutional expert, Craig Prescott from the Royal Holloway, University of London recently spoke about what she calls the Royal Family’s most “uneasy relationship”, that being with financial transparency.
In Prescott’s eyes, “it’s always a weak spot for the monarchy. The Royal Family look like they have fantastic wealth and so the perception is of taxpayers’ money going to people who are very, very wealthy in the first place – and that’s never a good look.”
“However, if you want to have a monarchy that carries out public functions, then the state should pay for that, fundamentally,” he did make clear.
A similar thought has come from biographer Andrew Lownie for he claims the downfall of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is what’s increased the public’s desire for financial transparency when it comes to the British royals.
It’s opened a can of worms for the rest of the Royal Family about their own finances and… I hope there’s more scrutiny, as they need to be more open,” he said in his own words.
But he isn’t the only one, a former senior civil servant also spoke to the BBC about his experience being in their employ and made a shocking claim, one that saw him say, “I couldn’t believe it… it was like it wasn’t real money, they weren’t spending any of their own money.”
