Markle and Prince Harry’s new hire has been branded a ‘divisive’ figure, as she used to work on The Crown, running global publicity for the Netflix show.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have hired Emily Robinson as their new Director of Communications.
The communications expert, who has worked in entertainment PR for nearly 20 years, is known for managing global publicity for Netflix series The Crown from seasons three to six. The sixth season of the series, inspired by the British royal family, featured contentious plots, such as Prince Harry donning Nazi attire and the portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales’s spirit conversing with Queen Elizabeth II.

Insiders claim that Emily managed The Crown’s publicity “with an iron fist” and was considered “divisive” within Netflix for her approach. Emily left her role at Netflix in April 2024, shortly after the release of the final and most provocative season.

A source expressed astonishment to the Daily Mail regarding the Sussexes’ choice, “In the circumstances, it’s almost beyond belief that Harry and Meghan would hire someone straight from The Crown.” Despite Emily’s association with The Crown, the Sussexes view this as just one chapter in her extensive career.

Harry has previously acknowledged his tolerance for The Crown’s dramatization of royal life, reports the Express. During a 2021 chat with James Corden, he said about the show, “They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fiction. But it’s loosely based on the truth…I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family, or my wife, or myself.”

An insider spoke highly of Emily, stating, “She was always very charming and supportive to Peter Morgan and all the actors in The Crown. She is one of the breed of publicists who think that the talent can do no wrong.”
