Daniil Medvedev has joined the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on the injury list.
Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev had to retire in the Madrid Open 2024 quarter-final against Jiri Lehecka on Thursday, May 2, due to an injury.

During the first set, while Medvedev was leading the match 3-2, the ATP World No. 4 went off-court for treatment on his right upper leg. After returning from the small break, the Russian tennis star kept complaining to the physio about the pain and fitness issues he was feeling.

Daniil Medvedev struggled to move properly on the court and eventually lost the first set 6-4. He was later forced to retire from the game as the pain and troubles were increasing.

After the match, Daniil Medvedev stated that he felt something wrong in his right hip while he was trying to return Jiri Lehecka’s serve. He said, “It was a return when he served and volleyed, and I don’t know if I felt it on the return or the drop shot, but when I ran, I wanted to run faster and faster during the movement, and suddenly felt my hip blocked.”

He then added that he wasn’t able to spring or even move properly due to the problem. Daniil Medvedev added, “I couldn’t sprint, like when you strain a muscle or have a spasm, which is tough to know which of the two. Working with the physio, I asked if I could make it worse. He said, ‘If it’s a tear, then yes. If it’s a spasm, no’.”

However, with the unfortunate injury, the Russian has joined the growing list of tennis players who are uncertain about their participation in the upcoming French Open. The former World No. 1 can possibly miss the upcoming Rome Masters; however, he would not want to miss the French Open.

Earlier this week, 2024 Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner opted out of the tournament due to a hip injury. Meanwhile, two-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz missed the Monte Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open due to a right forearm issue, and again, he has withdrawn from the ATP 1000 Rome Masters.
