New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, was officially indicted by a Virginia federal grand jury.

Citing an unnamed source, The Associated Press on Thursday said she was indicted on one count of bank fraud following a mortgage fraud investigation.

James took to social media to say she views the indictment as “political retribution” on behalf of President Donald Trump.

This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system. He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as the New York State Attorney General,” James said in a video statement she shared on X.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for James’ indictment, saying she is “corrupt” and “guilty as hell.” He has also said she is “a complete and total disaster.”

James denied any wrongdoing. She said she made an error while filling out a form related to a home purchase but quickly rectified it and didn’t deceive the lender.

Her lawyer accused the Justice Department of concocting a bogus criminal case to settle what he described as Trump’s personal vendetta against James, who in 2024 won a judgment against Trump and his companies in a lawsuit alleging he lied to banks and others about the value of his assets.

I stand strongly behind my office’s litigation against the Trump organization,” she said in the video statement. “We conducted a two-year investigation based on the facts and evidence — not politics. Judges have upheld the trial court’s finding that Donald Trump, his company, and his two sons, are liable for fraud. I am a proud woman of faith, and I know that faith and fear cannot share the same space. So, today, I am not fearful — I am fearless, and as my faith teaches me, no weapon formed against me shall prosper. We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights and I will continue to do my job.”

The new comes just a few weeks after former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey was indicted on two counts of making false statements and obstruction of justice.

“I can only say that Comey’s a bad person, he’s a sick person, I think he’s a sick guy actually, he did terrible things at the FBI,” Trump has said of Comey.

Vice President JD Vance previously said it is just the beginning for the Trump administration, as he noted there will be more indictments to come.

“Well, there’s certainly gonna be more indictments coming over the next three and a half years of the Trump administration, but we’re always going to let the law drive this stuff, and the facts of the case, and not political motivations,” Vance said during a recent interview with Martha MacCalllum on “Fox News Sunday.”
